Originally meant to bridge the gap between all three sagas of Robotech (Macross, Southern Cross, Mospeada) and run for 65 episodes, this series was scrapped when the US Dollar fell in comparison to the Japanese Yen and Harmony Gold could not afford to fund the production, especially after Matchbox bailed out of sponsorship. The first 3 episodes were then spliced together into one movie. Unlike the TV series, Robotech II: The Sentinels did not re-use animation from another anime other than some flashback footage from Macross; original animation was created for the new series, which was completely inferior to the animation of the Robotech series itself. Robotech II: The Sentinels is currently available on DVD as a bonus disc in box 3 of Robotech: The Macross Saga and an extra on Robotech Protoculture Collection.
