Self-confessed geeks in Japan can now score a date with someone without being 'overly shy'. Apparently, this is fast becoming a new trend in the "otaku dating world." So how do they overcome their "fear"? Well, by wearing cartoon character masks!
Below is a snapshot of how the the matchmaking session between the otakus' took place in Washinomiya, Saitama Prefecture.

They donned masks of famous fictional characters such as Doraemon, Mickey Mouse etc. Then, they go around introducing themselves as an 'anime character'. A participant (27yrs) stated that she felt it was an easier way to interact with others and would not be able to do it if, it wasn't for the mask. Whilst another participant in his 30s stated that he's amazed at how much it's helped him pair up with someone who may be his potential date without feeling too anxious. By the end of the session, there were 7 couples already paired up.
