Monday came the announcement that mangaka Minoru Furuya’s manga “Himizu” will be made into a live-action film. It is to be directed by controversial filmmaker and poet “Shion Sono” (Love Exposure, Cold Fish and many others).
“Himizu” was published in “Young Magazine” from 2001-2003 and had a serious tone to it which represented a move away from comedy work for Furuya such as the manga “Ping-Pong Club”. “Himizu” had a gloomy, dark story focusing on the cruelty of the human mind.
Sono told “Young Magazine”, “It’s a great honor to be filming this. It’s a risky venture I think.” Sono is particularly excited about the project and has re-read the manga many times leading up to filming.
A release date is slated for sometime in 2012 with no cast information at this time.
