At his Long Beach Comic Con panel on Saturday, director Shane Black confirmed that Warner Brothers' planned live-action adaption of Death Note is still in the works.
However, Black noted that for a while, the project was in jeopardy as the studio wanted to loose Ryuk, a central character to the manga's plot, and change Light as they didn't want him to be "evil". He said that "they just kept qualifying it until it ceased to exist." Black noted that Ryuk's character and Light's downward spiral have been restored in the script. He added that those are what the film should be about.
Warner Brothers acquired the rights to the series from Vertigo Entertainment in 2009. Previously, brothers Vlas and Charles Parlapanides were attached to the project.
